Sorority History

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world.

Founded on January 13, 1913 by twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University, the Sorority is currently a sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominately Black college educated women.

This includes 1,000 collegiate and alumnae chapters located in the United States, Canada, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea.

The major programs of the sorority are based upon the organization’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust:

  • Economic Development

  • Physical and Mental Health

  • Educational Development

  • Political Awareness and Involvement

  • International Awareness and Involvement

Chapter History

The Kappa Omicron Chapter

On July 21, 1973, with the wisdom of their advisors, five phenomenal women laid the foundation for the Kappa Omicron Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. 

As the first African-American Greek sorority at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Kappa Omicron Chapter has and will continue to be a role model in our university community while maintaining a steadfast commitment to activism.

The chapter has received numerous awards and accolades including National Collegiate Chapter of the Year, NPHC Chapter of the Year, highest GPA, National Advising Team of the Year, National and Regional Program of the Year awards, eleven-time NPHC Step Show Champions, two-time CIAA Step Show Champions. Annually Kappa Omicron hosts more than 50 programs, establishing and maintaining almost 30 community service partnerships in the Chapel Hill area. No matter the avenue, Kappa Omicron continues to set the bar others must reach.

As the women of the Kappa Omicron Chapter celebrate forty-nine years of devotion to Delta, the legacy of strong sisterhood and a dedication to service and scholarship persist.

 

Members, past and present, will continue to uphold the legacy of our 22 Founders as the thoroughness of the distinguished ladies of crimson and cream perseveres forever.
